“Take Care of People : People before Paper, People before Profits, People before Self and People before Projects” - Carol S. Ritter
Positive places start with positive people! Positive people emerge through positive opportunities to serve! This is a place for people to list volunteer opportunities for Stationers to take part in. The opportunity must involved one of the following: beautifying Huntington Station, serving the youth of Huntington Station, or providing wholesome entertainment for Huntington Station community members. TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE HUNTINGTON STATION A PLACE FOR ALL TO SUCCEED! (Read the Disclaimer and Guidelines to Posting Volunteer Opportunities before posting or joining an opportunity.)
For years, leadership of Suffolk County Council – Boy Scouts of America has been trying to figure out how to effectively create a diversity program. Our membership is almost entirely white people, not by design but by who volunteers.
The biggest obstacle is finding a person of color qualified and willing to serve as Scoutmaster of a troop – a white Scoutmaster leading a troop of black and latino kids wouldn’t settle right. Kids of all colors are wealcome, it’s just reasonable that most of a Troop in the middle of the Station would fall into those two groups. We would prefer an Eagle Scout for the position, but that’s not a requirement. This is a big commitment, to be a leader and father figure to any boys that show up. Women are perfectly allowable as Scoutmasters, but decidedly less common. There are plenty of training opportunites available for anyone who is willing but doesn’t feel they know enough to do it.
This is not intended as tokenism, we really want to bring the program to boys who need it most, to give them something to do after school, keep them out of trouble, give them positive role models, teach them values. The hope is that once we show one successful troop helping to improve a neighborhood, more will spring up in other Suffolk communities.
A new troop also needs a charter organization and a meeting place, churches and VFW groups are common places to start with that.
I’m an Eagle Scout, and well connected to the Council leadership – once we have a Scoutmaster, I should be able to direct some resources to the project pretty easily. I’m also too white for the top job, though I might be able to help as an Assistant Scoutmaster or some other position. Plain text is especially poor at conveying tone and intent, so please understand that this is meant in only the most positive way, not as patronizing or White Man telling other people how to live.
Please also take any disucssion of what Leadership likes to euphamistically refer to as “the constitutional issue” off line. Let’s not have one point of disagreement derail all the good this can bring to the community. Keep it positive.
