A common definition of a STEM school: STEM education is an interdisciplinary approach to learning where rigorous academic concepts are coupled with real-world lessons as students apply science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in contexts that make connections between school, community, work, and the global enterprise enabling the development of STEM literacy and with it the ability to compete in the new economy. (Tsupros, 2009)

  1. Creating new models for engaging kids in learning will be essential.  Wonderful for community building.

  2. Add me to the list of those who support the idea of Jack Abrams School becoming a specialized school (Charter, Magnet or whatever term one wants to apply) for STEM Programs.
I can this becoming a reality in terms of it functioning as a portal for secondary education (HS) students preparing for technical programs at colleges such as Farmingdale and Suffolk and even Stony Brook.  Sort of Huntington’s own little Brooklyn Tech.
In terms of curriculum it could work much like The Wilson Tech program works for other professions in that students would receive the basics of English, Social Science and PE at Huntington High and the balance of their day would be spent on their core studies of Science, Technology, Engineeering and Math at the newly repurposed Jack Abrams.
This is a win-win for our community because this enhancement would put SD #3 in a league above surrounding districts and it would provide a solution to the many issues and disharmony surrounding  this currently closed yet very modern school.
