Beer Garden

Long Island could use more outdoor beer gardens thanks to our nice open spaces and greenery.  Having one located in Huntington Station would be a prime spot.
Beer gardens:

  • Create community gathering spaces
  • Can be for people of all ages from 20s
  • Can serve lots of interesting food (apart from reglar bar fare)
  • Can have a range of activities–ping pong tables, foosball, cards, board games, etc.
  • Host various events–band nights, book clubs, poetry nights, etc.

Beer gardens are doing very well in adjacent areas like Queens and Brooklyn.

John– the ideas you Mauricio, Carlos, and Omar came up with regarding the Beer Garden were spot on! I think you should work with Prachi to get them updated on the description!

  2. I envision a large outdoor / partially covered (pergola) space where people could congregate and get to know there neighbors(communal tables). I think the beer garden should be just that… A space with decorative shrubs , plants and terrace . If you were to line the outdoor space with adult arborvites it would give an inviting cozy place that would be its own oassis. The landscaped patio with an emphasis on the various craft brews from long island would be a terrific way to showcase what long island has to offer.  The black forest brew house is the closest thing to a beer garden and it’s always packed on nice days. My vision would be a meeting place for people getting off the train to relax and unwind. Beer gardens foster a relaxed atmosphere as People are free to drink/ order food at their leasuire. This idea would truly be a destination spot for people. You have Huntington village as the epicenter of the foodie scene but the only bar that complements that true foodie scene is sap suckers(which I absolutely love) but its very tiny and hard to enjoy on a crowded night. We have the space in HS so why not capitalize on it!

  3. I doubt MS13 is into $7 craft beer, definitely like this idea.

  4. I agree with you H-tonian that it is “their turf”, but in my experience living in the station( about 1 mile from the train station) if you dont go looking for problems, you wont have problems.  I have walked home from the LIRR station a million times both day and night and i have never had a problem. i understand your concern but also try to be open minded and give something a shot

  5. I agree with Jknight 05,
The Station is not as bad as it’s reputation. I have never had a problem at the train ststion. I personally would not walk home. This is from years of the are being cosidered a bad nieghborhood.

  7.  just commented on the ”BBQ, Billiards, and Brew House” idea. I feel that my concerns over that idea are applicable to this one.
While I think a beer garden with outdoor space would be a welcome addition to Huntington Village or Melville, it will face serious challanges in the area of Huntington Station near the LIRR station. The presence of a large outdoor (or indoor) space that serves alcohol in an neighborhood where shootings, stabbings, and gang activity have been prevalent makes me very nervous. How can you garantee that this will be a place that “young professionals” and not MS13 gang members frequent? It’s their turf after all.
