This is a popular strategy to increase the supply of workforce housing while adding to and diversifying revenue streams for the land owner. Who knows, maybe somebody can live right above where they work for the shortest commute ever! We very much need more rental apartments that young professionals like teachers, nurses, and engineers can afford to live in on a starting salary that aren’t illegal basements.

I think Nancy’s idea makes sense, and some of the infrascructure may already be there to accomplish this with existing buildings along NY Ave. Some of the buildings probably already have second-floor apartments, but the area is not well-maintained and will not attract tenants who care about the area in its current state. I think community clean-up and beautification projects would need to be considered for the existing walkways and structures along the NY Ave. corridor in conjunction with any new development in order for any plan to be successful.
The Town and Suffolk county made the mistake in 1987 when they built Highview. Now you will never get back a property that should be the anchor of any HS project.
